The Torrot Velocípedo receives Honourable Mention at Red Dot Awards

The Torrot Velocípedo has received an Honourable Mention at the Red Dot Awards 2019, one of the most important design competitions in the world. The three-wheeled electric, connected vehicle was awarded in the Cars & Motorcycles category due to its innovative design strategy and industrial design, created by Torrot together with Mormedi. Mormedi is a strategic design and innovation consultancy headquartered in Madrid, with offices in London and Tokyo. Mormedi was chosen by Torrot to define what is to become the vehicle for an electric future: The Velocípedo.

The Velocípedo is a three-wheeled electric vehicle that represents a totally new form of urban mobility. It combines the agility of a motorcycle and the safety and comfort benefits of a car, with zero carbon emissions. The final production design for the Velocípedo was created by Torrot, based on concept and design strategy work carried out by Torrot together with Mormedi.

Given the pioneering nature of the project, a thorough and extensive research and strategy phase was crucial to understand the complex urban mobility context and to develop the new vehicle. Research included the study of trends in the context of future urban mobility, benchmarking, and in-depth user interviews and co-creation sessions. The outcome is a vehicle that fulfils a niche in the market characterised by users’ needs for an enclosed vehicle with the benefits of both a motorcycle and a car: agile, safe, comfortable, connected, and universal.

Award-winning design quality

Iván Contreras, CEO of Torrot thanked Red Dot’s CEO, Professor Dr. Peter Zec, who congratulated the winners for satisfying the strict criteria of the jury as this is proof of their award-winning design quality. “We are proud to know that the excellence, originality, and design strategy of the Velocípedo has been recognized in a segment as complex as automotive. This 100% Spanish design has propelled us into the international arena, which pushes us to work harder in order to take the electric vehicle revolution into the streets as quickly as possible”. Contreras also mentioned that the Velocípedo is being manufactured in the Torrot HomeTECH industrial center, based in the Zona Franca (Free Zone) in Cádiz.
